Dave Chadburn - Evaluation

Decided upon based on the genre my opening sequence I choose to use Warner Independent as after looking at their film releases My sequence had all the requirements of an opening sequence such as establishing its genre, introducing characters etc. It also has the genres requirements as well and that’s why I choose Warner Independent, they have a good selection and quite a few features with a similar genre, the media institution of Warner Independent is a typical institution for films such as the 2004 film ‘HORROR’, the 2005 film, ‘THE JACKET’ (A military veteran goes on a journey into the future, where he can foresee his death and is left with questions that could save his life and those he loves.), the 2007 film ‘IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH’ (A career officer and his wife work with a police detective to uncover the truth behind their son's disappearance following his return from a tour of duty in Iraq.), and the 2008 film, ‘FUNNY GAMES’ (Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement.), which all come from Warner Independent. These films dealt with the similar features of mine as all of them contain inocent people being punished and killed for something they didn’t do just as mine does. My film is an action thriller because it consists of the two throughout by being filled with action such as all the killing clips with fast editing giving it a stylish and quick pace, which is thrilling and exciting for the audience. I used many conventions to complete my purpose some of which are the costumes. I used costumes that are typical costumes of what is the stereotypical view of these characters [a convict/SWAT team/and a person training for fitness]. These costumes help me clarify the characters roles straight away. The non-diagetic music establishes the pace of the film and states it is fast and active. The props I used were chosen to keep with the idea I started with, a SWAT chase. So I used M4 rifles, pistols, SWAT gear such as helmets and masks, the correct outfits and colours, and also the setting, which looks a bit dull on the outside which sticks with the gloomy mood of death and murder.

The storyline is that an X-SWAT was set up by his own team and was forced to quit at gunpoint of his own gun and then was blamed for a mass murder on innocent civilians. This led to him being incarcerated and sentenced to death by torture. Yet a lucky event takes place and a truck is smashed into and the convict sees and seizes the opportunity to make a run for it and by being X-SWAT and one of the best, skill is in his possession. He picks the SWAT team off one by one and goes for justice. For a change in similar types of film I chose to do it from the convict’s point of view and also that he is the hero and is the one who is victorious. I did this so it would be new and not the same as others and boring.

My project represents ‘accused men’ in a different way to what other films show as in my film the accused man who was innocent turn evil and decides to take what he learnt from the ‘force’ he used to work for before being set up and use it against his x work team! Films usually show and stick to the stereotypical views of people, but mine slightly turns of course and makes a new ‘dirt track’ for the stereotypical view for males as it shows that even men who are perfect to their fullest ability throughout life and do their all to do their best get set up and punished for nothing and in turn switch to the devils side and go ‘crazy’. For example in the 1997 film ‘Gang Related’ featuring Tupac Shakur and ………….. Where two Police are crooked cops and frame innocent men for murders and use the stereotypical of men to do these acts of ‘wrong’ and punish innocent people just as in my film, and then in this film ‘Gang Related’ the innocent man stays innocent and wins the fight against the ‘law’, but in mine there is a little twist as the convict (the innocent man) wins the ‘law’ but in a different way as he decides to fight back and become that of which he was accused! AMONSTEROUS MASS KILLER! So I kept to what the costumes would be in real life as they portrayed what I wanted to put across and kept realism. The way the actors act in the sequence shows them to be normal human beings and not causing any sort of trouble for the audience again keeping to the realism of the piece. The actions of the main character played by Daniel Rutherford shows him living ‘Days Of Grace’ by this I mean doing what’s righteous of God.

Media language in my opening sequence is used to create effects of power and dominance throughout showing the main character and also the pain and drama through the horrific kills and the use of parallel music which ain my feedback found out it complemented my film as over 70% like its effect but the rest give advise on speeding it up and slowing it down in some places and also on adding some more stings. Media language also helped me publish the storyline through costumes and the dull lighting represented the dull atmosphere of death and pain. So I have a good use and mixture of Mese en scene, sound, cinematography and also editing which all work well together to deliver an effective performance piece for an opening sequence to a film.

The characters within my film are quickly introduced within it to get straight into the action and delay with the genre of action thriller. The storyline is easily visible and easy to follow with the use of enigmas throughout.

The use of the non diegetic music ha s the spontaneous affect of establishing and magnifying actins such as the fatality strikes and kills of the SWAT men as the music works parallel with the movie makes it more dramatic and the sting sounds simplify the action to show plainly what is happening; such as this still shot here. Also the non-diegetic music creates the pace for my sequence and keeps rhythm as it has a hindering affect for further purpose and establishment of the quick actions and strikes.

My film represents violent and aggressive behaviours of killers and also of the stereotypical middle aged man such as the two middle aged men who dominate the film in ‘Funny Games’ and also films such as ‘Die Hard’ were the main character is male and considered heartless and he kills people without fought which keeps and relates my film to this stereotypical view of ‘heartless males’. It consists of a dominant representation as it only contains men, which will not challenge my audience as it fits into this dominant representation of men.

My opening sequence appeals to a more male audience of around 16-35 as this is a popular genre for this age group, and also the fact that the vilain is the hero makes this film appeal to this audience as the characters are all within this age group just like they are in such films such as ‘SWAT’ and ‘FUGITIVE’. The use of this particular age group aloso helps the audience expect whats coming.

The sequence of my film is in a linear motion as it is in a straight-line feedback said that this was good and “really brought the action together” and “the storyline was easy to follow and enjoyable to watch”. So my feedback backs up what I intended to do and shows that it worked. The binary opposites within my film are ones such as the convict v the SWAT team, and life and death situations which battle and keep action going throughout and this was also commented on within my feedback, “I liked how the idea of a convict killing the SWAT guys, haha its well good!” So the fact that the ‘bad’ guy is winning and killing the ‘good’ guys.

From feedback, I have received positive comments and data from the people I have asked. Some feedback that I received was constructive criticism which I firmly agree with as I have looked back at my film and then the feedback and I have analysed it closely and I also agree on what some of my respondents have reported back and if I were to remake my opening sequence then I would definitely incorporate their ideas as I believe it would improve my film as all feedback is good and helpful to all film producers. 90% of my feedback questionnaires said that they would go and see my film when/if it comes out, which I am pleased with considering I worked as a one man team pursuing in doing and completing all of the work my self in order for me completely liable for it. All respondents thoroughly enjoyed it and my feedback was mainly positive so I think I did a pretty good job.
The use of low key lighting alows me to create dramatic effects for my audience to be sensationalised.
The transformation is complete as the use backlighting makes him to be EVIL...
Side lighting is used to show his two sides and the switch from good to EVIL.
